22 ways to Stay Motivated

Achieving a set goal is scarcely easy. Majority have to do a lot of hard work to get to the end point or even close to it. But to do even that, one needs to be motivated enough to do so. It’s not always possible to be motivated everytime. There are occasions even for the highly motivated ones where they also feel demotivated or distracted from their goals. 1) Remember why you started

Everyone at some point in time doubts themselves whether they would achieve their goal or not. Everytime if you think this make sure to remind yourself why you started. The end goal is most important and if you keep reminding yourself that then motivation will automatically come too.

2) Divide your goal in small targets

When you look to the end goal that you’ve set for yourself, it may be daunting just to think of the work required to get there. But if you divide it in small targets then it will be a lot easier. For example. if your goal is “re-organize my entire closet,” start by saying, “First I’m going to tackle the shoes, then the belts, then the winter coats in the back,” etc. This method can make even the biggest task feel more manageable.

3) Don’t push yourself too hard

There might be times when your weekly or monthly goal might not pan out as you thought. If you fail to meet your goals for that period, take it as a lesson. Try to complete your next target before time, so that you can use the saved time to complete the pending work. This way you stay right on schedule even if you have taken a hit.

4) Watch and read motivational stories

Everyone deserves a great pep talk every once in a while. Stay elevated by watching YouTube videos of inspirational moments so you can suddenly feel a new sense of motivation to keep striving.

5) Take a break

Working towards a goal might be tiring and it’s okay to get tired. Just take a break when you’re tired as it will rejuvenate you to again do the necessary work.

6) Organize

Try making a schedule. Specify the amount of work that you want completed within a time period. Research has proven that people who make time tables and get themselves organised are more likely to reach their goals.

7) Reward yourself

Whenever you complete a target, make sure to reward yourself. This could be as simple as a bowl of ice cream after a long, hard week of working out or as rewarding as a trip to the spa for all your hard work.

8) Surround yourself with positive people

As human beings we give and receive energy and inspiration. Make sure you are receiving as much, or more, than you are handing out.

9) Don’t worry about what you can’t control

Take control of what you can, and don’t worry about what you can’t. So if you often find yourself paralyzed with the “what ifs”, let it go and just focus on turning out quality work.

10) Be Persistent

One thing that can guarantee your success is being persistent. Even if you’re not in the mood, do something proactive, even if it’s a small thing compared to your goal.

11) Eliminate Distractions

Identify anything that’s causing you to procrastinate, then get rid of it. Sell it or put it in a storage locker. Move away from it. Throw it away. You can’t become motivated if you’re squandering all of your time.

12) Hold yourself accountable

You need to be able to hold yourself accountable if your small targets are not reached. For example- throw away your delicious cookies you have been saving or give money to charity that you’ve been saving to buy something luxurious.

13) Excercise a little

Moving your body here and there increases your energy. The newfound energy then can be put into good use plus you will feel better about yourself if you get healthy by doing a little excercise.

14) Follow your Intuition

Whenever you are stuck at something just follow your intuition. It’s one of the mechanism that has a high success rate.

15) Approach your task in a different way

If you’re stuck somewhere and the conventional methods are not working, try something new. The new out of the box thinking, if it works, will make you motivated to keep going.

16) Set Deadlines

Setting a time limit for an activity will enable you to assemble your resources and materials toward accomplishing things you might not otherwise get done.

17) Don’t Multitask

Give all your undivided attention to the task at hand. Don’t waste your energy with useless or unnecessary tasks.

For example- if you want to excercise with a friend in the gym 2 times/week. Write two checks to the friend of let’s say ₹500 and ask your friend to cash it in everytime you miss the gym.

2) Positive Reinforcement

One of the essential human behaviour is to do more of X work if that work is rewarding. The practice of rewarding yourself positively reinforces or in simple words tells your brain that if you do more of X work you’ll get more rewards which helps in boosting motivation for the same.

3) Chunking

It is technique originally used to improve memory. For example- to remember a number like 2229016472 can be hard for people. But if you can divide it like 222-9016-472 then it make it easy to remember.

4) Visualisation

Visualization is a very powerful practice. It helps us to make a clear representation in our minds of what we want to achieve, what our end goal is. It also helps us to get more motivation to work towards that end goal. Jim Carrey once said in Oprah Winfrey show that before becoming successful he wrote a check to himself for 10 million dollars. He visualised it coming true and then put it aside. Then a few years later he got a check of 10 million dollars, the exact amount.

5) Productive Procrastination

The basic idea is that fighting against our tendency to procrastinate doesn’t work very well in the long run. And instead, it’s best to accept that it’s normal to want to procrastinate and figure out a way to work with this tendency.
